ACRA Introduces Special UENs (SUNs)

With effect from 9th February 2018, Singapore business and corporate entity owners can choose a Special Unique Entity Number (known as a Special UEN, or ‘SUN’) for their new venture.

Until now, there has been no way to know, or choose, a UEN in advance – a UEN is the ACRA-issued identifying ID for a business/corporate entity, which is used for all official trade and government transactions i.e. license registration, tax filing.

Usually, all business and corporate entities are automatically issued with a system generated UEN at the point of their incorporation, registration, or entity conversion. As to whether the number combination of a UEN turns out to be culturally auspicious or unlucky; memorable or forgettable, this has always been down to pot luck!

However, for a fee, you can now choose to have a Special UEN (SUN) from a list of ACRA-reserved UENs, which have been classified into two categories based on perceived consumer appeal (with special attention to Chinese cultural practices), and with a corresponding price tag attached.

The 2 categories of SUNs available are:

• Tier 1 Special UENs can be purchased for a fee of S$3,000 and include UENs with consecutive identical numbers (eg. 5 in a row for companies, 4 in a row for LLPs), and UENs with any number combination involving the number ‘8’.
• Tier 2 Special UENs can be purchased for a fee of S$1,000 and include UENs with a repetitive number pattern (excluding the number ‘8’), and UENs which end with a triple identical number (eg. ‘222’, ‘666’, ‘777’).

SUNs are very limited in number and subject to availability, so it is a case of ‘get one while they last’.
